Eyelid Lift
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, rejuvenates the eyes by removing excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids. Drooping eyelids can cause vision obstruction and restore radiance and youthfulness to the eye area. Drooping eyelids can be corrected with eyelid surgery. A plastic surgeon provides several eyelid enhancement options to his patients in order to provide them with a personalized surgical plan that meets their specific cosmetic goals. Patients may improve the appearance of their upper or lower eyelids, or both, for optimal eye rejuvenation.
The eyes are one of the first indicators of aging. Your eyelids begin to droop as you age, making you appear tired and older than you are. Drooping eyelids can impair your vision if they progress far enough. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a procedure that can correct this as well as repair unsatisfactory eye traits you may have inherited. Blepharoplasty is one of the most popular facial rejuvenation procedures because it produces significant results with little downtime. Patients frequently enjoy compliments without mentioning they’ve had cosmetic surgery because the results are so natural and the scars are hidden and very discrete.
Mikamo, a nineteenth-century Japanese physician, reported the first cases of the double-eyelid procedure for aesthetic purposes in 1896, a time of social transition and early Westernization in Japan.
In 2019 there were a total of 1,439,360 eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) procedures performed worldwide.
Blephoplasty “Eyelid Surgery” can be performed as upper or lower eyelid surgery to address your specific concerns and achieve your desired outcome. This procedure is frequently combined with a face lift or brow lift for total facial rejuvenation.
Upper eyelid surgery is a common procedure to address concerns with the top eyelid. It involves creating a thin incision along the upper fold of the eyelid, removing excess fat, muscle and skin, and closing it with small, thin dissolvable sutures.
Lower blepharoplasty is cosmetic eyelid surgery that removes and redistributes fat for a smoother, tighter appearance. Incisions are made along the lower lash line and fat and tissue is redistributed, skin tightened, and excess removed. Incisions are closed with tiny sutures which will dissolve on their own.
Transconjunctival blepharoplasty can be performed to hide the incision underneath the lower eyelid.
Another type of eyelid surgery is called Asian eyelid surgery. It is typically performed on Asian patients who have a single eyelid or a low crease that makes their eyes appear smaller. Asian eyelid surgery can help those who lack a double eyelid by creating natural-looking upper eyelid creases that complement the facial anatomy and draw more attention to the eyes
Preparation for Eyelid Lift Surgery
Everything begins with an initial consultation, during which you will be asked about the reasons you want to have surgery. Your doctor will evaluate your eye skin and the surrounding area, as well as your overall health, after gaining a thorough understanding of your goals for this procedure. Smoking, medications you are taking, uncontrolled high blood pressure, a tendency to form excessive scars, and blood clotting problems are all general health factors that will be considered. It’s critical to be open and honest your doctor about any of these conditions that may apply to you, as he will need to be aware of them in order to reduce the possibility of complications during or after your procedure. Before the surgery, it is highly recommended to stop smoking since smoking can negatively impact the healing process and increase the risk of complications, so it’s important to quit smoking at least several weeks before and after the procedure.
Eyelid Lift Surgery Procedure
here are the general steps involved in an eyelid lift surgery, also known as blepharoplasty:
- Anesthesia: The patient is given local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia to ensure they are comfortable during the procedure.
- Incision: The surgeon creates incisions in the natural creases of the eyelids. For upper eyelids, the incision is made along the natural crease of the eyelid. For lower eyelids, the incision is made just below the lash line.
- Removal of excess skin and fat: The surgeon removes excess skin and fat from the eyelids. This is done to improve the appearance of droopy or puffy eyelids.
- Closure of incisions: The surgeon closes the incisions using fine sutures, which will be removed after several days.
- Bandaging: The surgeon may apply bandages or ointment to the eyelids to protect them and promote healing.
The overall duration of the surgery varies depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient’s individual needs. Your doctor will go over how to apply lubricant and eye drops after surgery, as well as how to clean the area around your eyes. For the first few nights, you must sleep at a 45-degree angle for optimal healing. To relieve pain and reduce swelling, use cold compresses and pain medication. It is also critical that you refrain from wearing contacts or make-up for the first two weeks following surgery.
If permanent stitches are used, they will be removed 7-10 days after surgery. For at least three weeks, avoid irritating the area around the eyes and engaging in strenuous activities. However, most patients are able to return to work and regular activities after about 10 days.
Eyelid surgery can cause temporary blurred or double vision, a pool of blood collecting under the skin (haematoma), noticeable scarring, and more serious problems such as injury to eye muscles, lower eyelid drooping away from the eye and turning outwards (ectropion), and lower eyelid pulling down and showing the white of the eye below the iris (eyelid retraction). The surgeon should explain how likely these risks and complications are and how they would be treated if they happen. Occasionally, patients find the desired effect was not achieved and need another operation.
Benefits of Eyelid Lift Surgery
An eyelid lift surgery not only can help you to improve the appearance of the eyes and face, making you look more youthful and refreshed, but it can also solve a variety of physical problems, such as
1.Excess skin or fat around the eyes: As people age, the skin around the eyes can become loose and saggy, which can create bags or puffiness under the eyes. An eyelid lift can remove excess skin and fat, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
2.Impaired vision: Excess skin on the upper eyelids can sometimes hang down and obstruct vision, making it difficult to see. An eyelid lift can remove this excess skin and improve vision.
3.Wrinkles or fine lines: An eyelid lift can also help to smooth out wrinkles or fine lines around the eyes, which can make a person look older or more tired than they actually are.
It’s important to discuss the potential risks and benefits of the procedure with a qualified plastic surgeon before deciding to undergo the surgery.
