The hospital is located in Via Aurelia, not far from the Vatican City. Founded in 1932, it’s classified as a first aid facility and can help about 15,000 patients a year during a normal hospital stay. In recent years, the hospital complex has undergone major remodelling. With 230 beds divided into 11 surgical departments, 9 operating rooms and an emergency room open around the clock, the focus is on robotic surgery, which allows minimally invasive and conservative procedures, reducing pain, hospitalization and complications.

San Carlo di Nancy Hospital is a reference center for robotic orthopedic surgery, being the first center in Italy to use the NAVIO robotic system for knee prostheses. It was awarded the Bollino Blu prize for its multidisciplinary approach with personalized diagnosis and treatment pathways for prostate cancer. It also has a highly specialized proctological surgery center for anorectal pathologies, and the most advanced ultra-mini-invasive gynecological surgery. The hospital has an inpatient area with private suites. Each suite, consisting of a patient room, a living room and a bathroom, some with a large terrace, is designed to meet the needs of guests in every detail. Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery

The San Carlo Hospital is a reference center for robotic orthopedic surgery, being the first center in Italy for robotic orthopedic surgery to use the NAVIO robotic system for the implantation of knee prostheses. Approaches that preserve the healthy parts of the joint are preferred. This is why unicompartmental prostheses (also known as mini-prostheses, or resurfacing prostheses) are widely used. Furthermore, the use of the Navio Robotic System allows an accurate positioning of the prosthesis which results in the maximum recovery of the movement of the joint. The Orthopedics and Traumatology Operative Unit of San Carlo di Nancy is a point of reference in the area for this type of approach which guarantees a better and faster functional recovery and allows to maintain the complete functionality of the joint.

Hospitalization lasts on average two (in the case of unicompartmental prostheses) or three days (total prostheses). Over 500 cases of robotic knee replacement have been performed and San Carlo di Nancy is the first centre in Italy and the third in Europe in the number of procedures with the Navio surgical system. With such a high expertise, the centre became a teaching point for robotic knee surgery. Urology & Robotics

The Urology Operative Unit of San Carlo di Nancy performs programmed and emergency urological surgery. The operating rooms of the San Carlo di Nancy Hospital are equipped with the most important technological innovations which include video columns for endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery with 3D technology and 55”4K screens, to improve the vision of any endoscopic procedure that is performed. The better the resolution, the more precise the intervention can be. The Operating Unit makes use of modern technologies such as: Tullium Laser, Holmium Laser, Flexible instruments, Robotic Surgery – Da Vinci XI System, Echolaser Therapy.

Da Vinci robotic surgery is applied above all in the urological oncology field and allows for a further conservative approach with a subsequent reduction in operative complications and a more rapid post-surgical recovery.

The San Carlo di Nancy Hospital was awarded the national prize for its multidisciplinary approach with personalized diagnosis and treatment pathways for prostate cancer. The hospital boasts a high rate of male incontinence treatment, with about 90 % of positive outcomes, offering gold standard treatments in bladder control. Gynecology

The Gynecology Operating Unit offers advanced therapeutic methods for the treatment of the main gynecological and uro-gynecological pathologies.

The surgery program available for gynecological and uro-gynecological pathologies is based on a personalized approach to the pathology – for each patient – and on ultra-minimally invasive surgery which allows fast post-operative recovery, less pain after surgery and reduction of scars for a better aesthetic result. The hospital specializes in minimally invasive treatments in gynecological oncology, diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy, treatment of benign pathologies of the uterus, ovaries and appendages, treatment of chronic pelvic pain and endometriosis. In the treatment of high-grade prolapses, on the other hand, robotic surgery allows the support mesh of the vaginal dome to be positioned in the best possible way at the promontory of the sacrum. The operation is very precise, the vascular structures and nervous integrity are preserved, avoiding repercussions such as constipation or urinary incontinence.

Abdominal and Proctological Surgery

Thanks to the close collaboration with the Italian Society of Proctological Surgery, San Carlo Hospital is considered a center of excellence for proctological pathologies and participates in numerous national and international multi-centre scientific studies for the development of new techniques and technologies aimed at the treatment of anomalous diseases, rectal and pelvic floor. The center treats anorectal pathologies, benign and malignant functional diseases affecting the final tract of the intestine, sigmoid colon, rectum and anus. The hospital also offers a personalized therapeutic strategy in cases of digestive, hepato-biliary-pancreatic oncology. Inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis) are also treated.

Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

The patient undergoes a first visit with the bariatric surgeon, who analyzes and studies the needs of the individual in order to verify the patient’s suitability for the surgery. Each case is evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of specialists including bariatric surgeon, psychiatrist, nutritionist, endocrinologist, internist and if necessary, a pulmonologist and a cardiologist, in order to have a full understanding of the patient’s general health and minimize complications. Hospitalization and recovery times are significantly reduced thanks to minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery. Most patients find a better quality of life after surgery since it improves breathing and metabolic processes, as well as general health and obesity related diseases. Around 1.000 procedures are performed a year, including minimally invasive endoscopic techniques, such as Vertical Gastroplasty with clip insertion or Endoscopic Plication, as well as traditional bariatric surgeries: Sleeve gastrectomy surgery, Gastric bypass surgery or Gastric band surgery.

High Level Accommodation

Guests are welcomed by dedicated staff in the admission office, then they are taken to the Reserved Admissions Area where, after completing formalities with the reception office, they are assigned to a specific room. The inpatient apartments have a personal assistant offering a customised accommodation service meeting all of the patient’s needs as long as they are compatible with medical indications.

Each suite dedicated for private patients has two rooms. Bedrooms are equipped with a modern and functional inpatient bed a smart TV set, a minibar, a safe, free Wi-Fi and a courtesy kit. The living room is furnished with a sofa-bed for the best comfort of the second guest. Rooms have wide windows brightening up the space – some of them also have a terrace.
