Lymphoedema is a chronic medical condition characterized by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid, leading to persistent swelling, commonly in the arms or legs. It often occurs due to lymphatic system damage or obstruction, frequently following surgery, radiation therapy, or infection. Without timely intervention, it can result in discomfort, mobility challenges, and recurrent infections.
However, innovative treatment solutions are now available, combining advanced lymphatic drainage techniques, compression therapies, and cutting-edge technologies like laser therapy and lymphatic bypass surgery. Discover how our tailored therapies can restore your health and help you regain control of your life.

At our hospitals, we offer cutting-edge treatment options for lymphoedema, combining advanced technology with personalized care to deliver optimal outcomes.
Our state-of-the-art therapies include microsurgical lymphatic bypass procedures and vascularized lymph node transfers, which aim to restore lymphatic flow and reduce swelling significantly. We also utilize intermittent pneumatic compression devices and bioimpedance spectroscopy to manage and monitor fluid retention with precision.
For non-invasive care, our patients benefit from low-level laser therapy (LLLT), which promotes lymphatic drainage and alleviates discomfort. Our multidisciplinary team integrates customized decongestive therapy programs, incorporating manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), compression garments, and physical therapy to ensure comprehensive care.
By leveraging these innovative approaches, we are dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals with lymphoedema.
Lymphoadema Diagnosis
If you’re at risk of lymphedema — for instance, if you’ve recently had cancer surgery involving your lymph nodes — your doctor may diagnose lymphedema based on your signs and symptoms.
If the cause of your lymphedema isn’t as obvious, your doctor may order imaging tests to get a look at your lymph system. Tests may include:
- MRI scan. Using a magnetic field and radio waves, an MRI produces 3D, high-resolution images of the involved tissue.
- CT scan. This X-ray technique produces detailed, cross-sectional images of the body’s structures. CT scans can reveal blockages in the lymphatic system.
- Ultrasound. This test uses sound waves to produce images of internal structures. It can help find obstructions within the lymphatic system and vascular system.
- Lymphoscintigraphy. During this test, the person is injected with a radioactive dye and then scanned by a machine. The resulting images show the dye moving through the lymph vessels, highlighting blockages.
Complications of Lymphoadema
Lymphoedema, if untreated or poorly managed, can lead to several serious complications that affect physical health, quality of life, and emotional well-being.
One of the most common issues is the heightened risk of infections, such as cellulitis and lymphangitis, which occur due to impaired lymphatic function. These infections can cause pain, redness, and swelling in the affected area and may become recurrent. Over time, chronic swelling can lead to significant skin changes, including fibrosis, where the skin and underlying tissues harden, hyperkeratosis, which causes thick, scaly skin, and papillomatosis, characterized by small wart-like growths.
The physical changes caused by lymphoedema can also restrict mobility and joint function, leading to stiffness and muscle weakness. This, combined with the visible swelling and lifestyle limitations, often impacts psychological well-being, contributing to anxiety, depression, and body image concerns. The risk of developing chronic wounds and ulcers is another significant complication, as the skin in affected areas becomes more prone to injury and slow healing. In rare and severe cases, untreated lymphoedema can result in lymphangiosarcoma, a malignant tumor associated with long-standing swelling. Additionally, patients may experience chronic pain and a persistent feeling of heaviness or tightness, further limiting daily activities and overall functionality.
With proper management, including early diagnosis, compression therapy, and infection prevention, many of these complications can be avoided or mitigated, improving outcomes for patients suffering from lymphoedema.
