Overview

Located in a quiet area in the Bologna hills, Clinica Privata Villalba began its activity in 1966. It has been part of GVM Care & Research since 2000, which launched a reorganisation process, projecting it to the centre of the private healthcare scene in the Bologna area. The hotel-like comfort aspect was improved through total renovation in 2006: the available surface was doubled while the number of beds – 71 – remained the same.

In 2010 Villalba continued to make innovations in its equipment, purchasing the most advanced cutting-edge imaging devices for diagnostics, such as Dynamic 4D Volume CT with 640 slices or Tru-Cut® Biopsy Device, which makes it possible to obtain high quality result and images with drastically reduced diagnostic times.

The Clinic has an operating section consisting of 5 rooms, 4 of which dedicated to major surgical activity and 1 for outpatient surgery as well as an Intensive Care service with 7 beds, including an isolation place, open 24 hours 365 days a year with an anesthesiologist always present.

Orthopedics

Orthopaedics Clinica Villalba Bologna

The orthopedic center of the Villalba Clinic is of great importance.

The professionalism of the surgeons is particularly evident in the treatment of joint pathologies (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle). There is also a section of Shoulder Surgery, Foot Surgery and Hand Surgery. Surgical and arthroscopic methods are used ranging from the simple repair of joint, cartilaginous, meniscal and ligament damage up to the prosthetic replacement of the hip, shoulder, knee and ankle. The Operating Unit also deals with the treatment of patients suffering from tumors of the musculoskeletal system, both of the bone and of the soft parts.

For the corrective surgery of Scoliosis, Spondylolisthesis and Kyphosis, operations are performed for complex deformities such as idiopathic, paralytic or degenerative scoliosis. Advanced three-dimensional correction techniques of the spine are used with only pedicle screws both at the thoracic and lumbar level which reduce the invasiveness of the operation, and increase the correction of the hump without the need for thoracic accessory times.

In the field of regenerative orthopedics, biological therapy is performed, which consists in the use of biological tissue for the treatment of joint diseases: transplants of biological, autologous and homologous material, as well as infiltration of biological material capable of regenerating injured tissue, such as mesenchymal stem cells from adipose tissue or bone marrow.

Among the professionals of the Villalba Clinic, the patients will find the surgeons with the experience acquired at the Isitituo Rizzoli stand out, one of the 5 best orthopedic hospitals in the world, according to the latest report by NewsWeek (US magazine, which annually draws up a ranking of the best hospitals in the world, divided by specialty).

Oncological Orthopedics

The clinic also treats patients affected by tumors of the musculoskeletal system, both in the bone and in the soft tissues. Malignant and benign tumors of the bone and soft tissues are treated. In the majority of cases, these are primary tumors, occurring in both pediatric and adult patients, which necessitate complex reconstructive techniques: resection prostheses, custom-made pelvic prostheses (using 3D printing technology), expandable prostheses for pediatric patients, osteoplastic bone grafts, and vascularized fibular grafts, often involving other surgical disciplines such as plastic surgery, navigated pelvic and sacral surgery in patients with primary or secondary tumors.

The specialists at the clinic are also active in the field of regenerative medicine:

  • Treatment of osteonecrosis with autologous stem cells
  • Treatment of pseudotumoral lesions with stem cells derived from bone marrow
  • Treatment of delayed bone healing with stem cells from bone marrow
  • Reconstruction of cartilage defects.

Treatment of Peritoneal Cancer

Peritoneal Cancer HIPEC PIPEC

The Department of Gastroenterology serves to prevent and treat various pathologies of the digestive system such as neoplasms, tumors, chronic and acute inflammatory pathologies, ulcers, constipation and proctological pathologies. In particular, highly advanced procedures, such as Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosolized Chemotherapy (PIPAC) are perfomed. These novel methods allow for the direct treatment of cancers within the peritoneum, an area where systemic chemotherapy has little effect due to the low number of blood vessels in this region, which are unable to effectively transport conventional chemotherapy. Peritoneal metastases from colorectal, gastric, or ovarian cancer are also treated. The gastroenterology center is engaged in clinical and biological studies conducted and in progress which have allowed and allow to optimize the knowledge on Peritoneal Neoplasms and the results obtained in the treatment of Patients.
